Nifty’s Calm Before the Storm: History Signals a Bigger Move Ahead, history indicates that the current calm may not persist indefinitely

REPORT BY: Raj Gaikar, Equity Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities

MUMBAI, 2 SEPTEMBER: The Nifty 50 has entered an unusually quiet phase, with the index recording 21 trading sessions with less than 1% daily movement in August 2026*. While subdued volatility may suggest a lack of direction, history shows that such periods have often been followed by a sharp expansion in market movement.

To put the current calm in perspective, we analysed 6,630 trading days across 320 calendar months since January 2000, identifying months where the Nifty did not record a single daily move of ±1% or more. Only eight months met this criterion, making such episodes relatively rare at just around one month in 40.

Interestingly, all eight instances occurred after 2017, with no such month recorded during the first 17 years of the dataset. The episodes were seen in June 2017, July 2018, December 2019, June 2021, April 2023, and July, September and December 2025.

The near-term outcome, however, has been relatively muted. The one-month forward return averaged 1.22%, with the Nifty ending higher in five of the eight instances. The three-month picture was considerably more striking: returns ranged from -29.34% to +12.06%, with six of the eight instances witnessing a move of more than 5% in either direction.

The message is therefore less about direction and more about magnitude. Historically, periods of extreme calm have not necessarily indicated whether the next major move would be upward or downward, but they have often preceded a meaningful increase in market movement.

With August 2026 now joining this rare list*, the data suggests that the Nifty may be entering another phase where volatility could return after an extended period of consolidation. The direction remains uncertain, but history indicates that the current calm may not persist indefinitely.

*August 2026 excludes the 3 August move, as the 1.60% change was attributed to the introduction of the new Closing Auction Session and occurred during the closing auction.

(The table highlights instances where the 1-month forward return moved more than ±2% and the 3-month forward return moved more than ±5% in the Nifty 50, indicating moves beyond the ordinary range.)
