ICICI Prudential Life Insurance: Rating: BUY, Target: INR 600, Upside: 34%
Tailwinds fading, agency key, CMP : INR 447 (as on 13 October 2026)
MUMBAI, 14 OCTOBER: ICICI Life Insurance’s (IPRU IN; formerly ICICI Prudential Life Insurance) Q2FY27 print was mixed. APE grew 15.6% YoY to INR 28.0bn, against our estimate of INR 26.8bn, a beat driven by higher share of lumpy group business. VNB rose 20.3% YoY to INR 7.1bn, in line with our estimate of INR 7.1bn. VNB margin expanded 100bps YoY to 25.4%, 110bps below our estimate of 26.5%, as short pay ANN and ULIP mix inched up. Retail protection APE grew 36.5% YoY and overall protection APE 33.7% YoY. Annuity (+65.5% YoY) and group funds (+51.5% YoY) were strong, and non-linked savings were broadly flat (-0.6% YoY). ULIP stayed subdued (+6.7% YoY) on volatile equity markets. Channel-wise, partnership distribution (+37.7% YoY), group (+39.6% YoY) and direct (+12.9% YoY) led the pack, while Agency (+4.1% YoY) and Banca (+3.9% YoY) stayed sluggish. H1FY27 VNB was INR 12.8bn (+22.3% YoY), with margin up 150bps YoY to 26.0%. Upgrade to Buy (from Accumulate) with a revised TP of INR 600 (from INR 625).
Mix shift drives YoY margin gain: VNB margin expanded 100bps YoY because the mix moved towards higher-margin products. Protection rose to 20.0% of Q2FY27 APE from 17.3% in Q2FY26, and annuity to 6.9% from 4.8%. Linked fell to 45.2% from 49.0% and non-linked to 19.0% from 22.1%. Within non-linked, non-par gained traction across channels at elevated yields. The 100bps expansion was about half of the ~200bps we had expected, driven by increased volumes of shorter pay ANN. Management expects protection growth to slow further as the GST exemption (Sep-25) enters the base from Q3FY27. As a result, the mix tailwind behind the margin is likely to fade in H2FY27.
Underlying costs improve; GST ITC drag to lap: In H1FY27, cost/total premium, including GST, rose 80bps YoY to 20.0%. Excluding GST, it fell 30bps YoY to 18.3%, and the savings ratio fell 90bps YoY to 11.6%. The ITC drag enters the base from Q3FY27, which should cushion margins as protection normalizes.
Agency yet to inflect; persistency, the watch item: Agency APE grew 4.1% YoY, well below company APE growth of 15.6%, and its share of APE fell to 22.8% from 25.3% in Q2FY26. This was despite gross agent additions rising 23% YoY in H1FY27, and management did not commit to double-digit agency growth in FY28. 25-month persistency fell to 76.2% from 82.8% a year ago, as weak cohorts carried through to later durations. EV grew 12.2% YoY, lagging VNB growth of 22.3%. Management refrained from commenting on the IRDAI’s draft commission/expense of management caps.
Upgrade to Buy, TP revised to INR 600: We marginally raise our FY27E estimates but cut FY28E/29E, factoring in higher group business in FY27E. Our margin assumptions are 25.9%/26.0%/26.4% for FY27E/28E/29E, respectively. We value IPRU using the appraisal value approach. The stock has corrected ~14% over the past three months, and valuations are now significantly lower (0.9x FY29E EVPS), so we upgrade to Buy from Accumulate. We revise our TP to INR 600 (from INR 625) on the back of marginally lower FY28E/29E estimates. This implies 1.3x Mar-28E EVPS of INR 471.2 and a 34% upside to the CMP. Key risks: slower agency recovery, deterioration in persistency, and impact from IRDAI’s distribution reforms.
